About Punjab

Punjab is a state in the northwest part of India. The term Punjab comprises two words: "punj meaning five and ab meaning water, thus the land of five rivers. The state is bordered by the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh to the east, Haryana to the south and southeast and Rajasthan to the southwest as well as the Pakistani province of Punjab to the west. It is also bounded to the north by the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Punjab was known as Panchanada during Mahabharata times. Due to Punjab location it came under constant attack and influence from the west and east. Punjab faced invasions by the Persians, Greeks, Afghans and Turks,. After the partition of India in 1947, the Punjab province was divided between India and Pakistan. The Indian Punjab was divided in 1966 with the formation of three states viz. Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and as well as the current state of Punjab. Punjab is the only state in India with a majority of Sikh population. Agriculture is the largest industry in Punjab.
